Beautiful venue - Yanni's Salon, Mövenpick Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel
This one is for the old school kids who lived in Dubai when Dhyafa Street was the center of the world. How times change.
Back when all you could see was a strip of sandy beach and flamingos, Yanni Wong's mother came along as the first ever Chinese woman to ever enter the UAE, opening the first ever beauty salon in Dubai in 1978 in Karama. The small salon quickly grew into a powerhouse chain, becoming the go-to it salon for hair and make up in fashion shows and editorials across the region. By the time we were all grown up the city had turned a new leaf, swallowing up home grown business after home grown business until it became littered with international chains. Currently, Yanni and her beautiful, self-designed salon in Mövenpick are the only ones left.
Over the past 2 to 3 years, Dubai has slowly been finding its way back to local businesses and its past identity as a little strip of sand filled with character, which is why I wanted to spotlight one of its most memorable entities and families. The next time you need to get your hair done, pass by Yanni's place - I guarantee you you'll get much more than just new hair.
PS. As always everything I am wearing is thrifted, vintage, or salvaged dead stock, from my mom's vintage YSL swimsuit heels to the i-Blues overcoat and Italian leather boots.
